CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: 2019/20 Artist in Residence

The Centre for Art Tapes is now accepting submissions for our 2019/2020 Artist in Residence program. CFAT invites artists in all stages of their careers to apply. The Artist in Residence will receive six months of unlimited access to CFAT to create and research a project. The proposed project can be on any subject matter and take any form but it must use electronic media in some form. This could be electronics, video, installation, audio, etc. If you have any questions about if your project would qualify as media art feel free to reach out. Ideally, the proposed project would use CFATs equipment and facilities.

The residency will run from October 1st 2019 to March 31st 2020 in K’jipuktuk (Halifax). Please note that this is a research and creation residency. CFAT aims to give artists the chance to explore and create, so there is no expectation of a finished work. The artist in residence will have 24-hour access to all aspects of the Centre including our electronics lab, full adobe suite, chromatte screen, etc. The selected participant will receive a $1,700 honorarium and a $300 fee for conducting an artist presentation or workshop in March 2020. CFAT does not have the ability to pay for travel, accommodations or materials. The residency is flexible to work with any work schedule and does not have a set amount of required hours.

If you are new to CFAT and unsure of what is possible within our space, please drop by! We would be happy to give you a tour of the space during our open hours from 10am – 5pm Tuesday to Friday. If you would like to ask questions about the residency or how to put together your application you can reach out to Tori at any time at tori@cfat.ca or at (902) 422-6822.

Submissions should include:

  • A description of your proposed project – what will be the focus of your experimentation/ research? (Maximum one page)
  • A CV, resume or short bio highlighting your past artistic experience
  • Maximum 10 digital images in jpeg format and/or video/audio clips. Video/audio clips must be under 5 minutes total and sent via URL.

Applications will only be accepted electronically. Please email all materials to tori@cfat.ca.

Submissions are due February 25th, 2019 at midnight. Applicants will be informed of the results by March 31st, 2019.

For any questions about the program or application process, please contact Programming Director Tori Fleming at (902) 422-6822 or by email at tori@cfat.ca. CFAT is able to provide a limited amount of support in putting an application together, including free access to our laptops for anyone who does not have access to a reliable computer.

CFAT recognizes our participation and complicity with the historic barriers to accessing media art opportunities. All of our programs are developed by a volunteer programming committee, and all applications will be reviewed by a jury of artists from a range of backgrounds. Artists are welcomed to self-identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ2SIA+, disabled, femme or any other community that is important to their identity. We are in an ongoing process of making our space and programs as welcoming and available to all as possible. If you have specific needs that you would like us to address, or any concerns please reach out or mention them in your application.

CFAT’s facility is wheelchair accessible and has one non-gendered washroom. We do not have automatic doors or push-buttons but our staff are happy to work with artists with disabilities to support them in comfortably and safely using our space. CFAT’s facility is a community-used space, and a number of members have 24-hour access. Participation with CFAT’s programs and use of our space by anyone is governed by our Code of Conduct, which does not tolerate discrimination or acts of violence in any form.
