Director of Operations

The Organization

The Centre for Art Tapes (CFAT) is a not for profit, artist-run, charitable organization that facilitates and supports artists at all levels working with electronic media including video, audio, and new media. We provide access to professional-level media art production facilities, residencies, and professional development, and we program regular exhibitions and screenings of contemporary media art from across Canada and beyond. Our programs and events also offer opportunities for members and the general public to critically engage with cultural and social issues through media art. The Opportunity

Reporting to the CFAT Board of Directors, the Operations Director is responsible for cultivating CFAT’s relationship with membership, supporters, funders, and the community at large while managing CFAT’s day-to-day administrative functions. The Operations Director develops and manages budgets for CFAT’s operations and assists in developing budgets for CFAT’s programs, services, and projects managed by the Technical Director and Program and Communications Director. Working collaboratively with these colleagues, the Operations Director implements the organizational vision, as articulated by the Board of Directors, through policies that ensure the safety and well-being of staff, members, and public who engage with CFAT’s physical spaces and programs. They are the primary liaison with our bookkeeper, landlord, and other regular operational contacts. The Operations Director will be expected to maintain office hours (28 hrs/wk) mostly during CFAT’s regular operating hours.

Required Skills and Expertise

The ideal candidate for this position has formal training in fine arts at the post-secondary level or equivalent, a minimum of 3-5 years’ work experience in non-profit arts administration, and an enthusiasm for working with contemporary media artists. They possess excellent written and verbal English-language communication skills, as evidenced in their record of success procuring funding and garnering community support for artists and/or the arts organizations. They are detail-oriented, exceptionally organized, and highly motivated and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. The incumbent must possess the ability to work independently and collaboratively with staff, board, committees and volunteers in a shared work environment. As this position requires oversight or assistance with CFAT events outside of regular operating hours, flexibility will be required. The Operations Director will be proficient with platforms and software used in our office environment, including Mac OS, Microsoft Office, and QuickBooks Online.

Assets

A thorough understanding and appreciation for the context of artistic production and exhibition in Halifax and Atlantic Canada, fluency in non-English languages (such as Mi’kmaw, French, Arabic, or Mandarin Chinese), and experience with Adobe Creative Suite are assets.

Benefits

The Operations Director will receive three weeks of paid vacation per year, access to health benefits, access to all workshops and equipment at CFAT, and opportunities to travel to conferences and professional development activities. Due to the nature of the role, the Operations Director will sometimes be required to work overtime, which is compensated with time off as described in CFAT’s Personnel Policy.

Starting salary for this position is $24,000/year.

Please send your C.V., a cover letter and three references electronically to cfatpersonnel@gmail.com (subject heading: Operations Director Hiring Committee), by December 20th, 2016 at 4pm.
