Centre for Art Tapes Call for Submissions: Video As A Physical Medium

The Centre for Art Tapes is accepting submissions for our 2017 – 18 residency, Video as a Physical Medium. CFAT invites artists in all stages of their careers to apply. The Local Artist in Residence will spend six months experimenting with video in our electronics lab. Video as a Physical Medium proposes research into the ways in which the video signal can be explored, manipulated and expanded upon through tactile methodologies. Applicants are encouraged to make full use of all of CFAT’s equipment and facilities, to explore video through various physical means of manipulation and alteration.

The residency will run from October 2017 to February 2018. Residents will have access to all aspects of the Centre including our transfer suite (used to digitize most types of video tape), our video mixer, Electronics Lab, etc. The selected participant will receive a $1,700 honorarium and a $300 fee for conducting an artist presentation or workshop. They will have access to a 24 hour working space in the electronics lab, free use of some electronic stock provided by the lab, and weekly assistance from our E-Lab Technician.

Previous experience in physical video is not required. For artists who are interested in the residency, but unsure of where to start, we will be holding a Video Hardware Hacking workshop hosted by Jesse Mitchell on September 6th at 6pm. This workshop is free to everyone and is highly recommended before applying.

Submissions should include:

  • A description of your proposed project – what will be the focus of your experimentation/ research? (Maximum one page)
  • A CV
  • Maximum 20 digital images in jpeg format and/or video/audio clips. Video/audio clips must be under 5 minutes total and sent via URL.

Applications will only be accepted electronically. Please email all materials to tori@cfat.ca. The successful applicant will be informed by the last week in September.

Submissions are due Monday September 25th, 2017 at midnight.

For any questions about the program or application process, please contact Programming Director Tori Fleming at (902) 422-6822 or by email at tori@cfat.ca.
